OLTL has hit it out of the park during May sweeps. I could talk about many of the excellent performances, the tornado special effects, the sweet wedding, the great funeral and the gripping stories, but I am struck by the performance of Dan Gauthier.
Since I have been so disgusted by the performance and self-serving nature of storyline of TK during the death of Ethan, I cannot but compare the two. In looking at the two actors and the two stories, one cannot fail to see the lack of depth on the one hand and the talent and fascinating drama of the other.
Kevin, DG has exhibited the full realm of emotions during this culmination of a difficult story. He was so bitter and angry toward his son, yet anguished and conflicted over the impossible choice he made concerning his treatment after his injuries. Duke's death was numbing for Kevin yet he has given us a view of a truly grieving father. The emotion, the tears, the guilt he has let us see has been riveting.
TK on the other hand has no emotion. He showed us nothing of what a loving father would feel given the tragic circumstances of a son's violent and senseless death. I suppose my view will be forever tainted by the smirk I saw on TK's face as the "dead" body of Ethan was wheeled out of the ER to the morgue. No matter this man's personal feelings regarding the show or any of the other performers, he is supposed to be an actor. I could see no evidence of that during the denouement of this heartbreaking story. If I had, perhaps I would have one ounce of respect for him. Sadly, I do not.
DG has given Emmy-worthy performances for days now. It will be a real tragedy if his fine work is ignored next year for the Emmy nominations. I am amazed at how much he made me feel. I did not like Duke and I found myself on Kevin's side in most all of the bad situations he found himself. Yet, I was almost mourning Duke right along with Kevin because of what he made me feel. That is quite a feat and the mark of a fine actor.
What excellent workby OLTL and DG and what a sorry commentary on the judgment of AMC's ptb. Just pitiful. Mediocre is not even the level of acting from the two actors we see most often on AMC give us. What a shame.
Watch OLTL and get a treat! Forget AMC.
