MURDER, THEY WROTE By Carolyn Hinsey
Simone is found dead this week on "All My Children," kicking off a murder mystery that will hit all the girls who work at Fusion - hard. "Derek's on the case," says Cameron Mathison (Ryan), referring to the police chief. "Zach is working on it. Ryan wants to find out who it is. Everybody's trying to figure out who did it."
Simone is found with lace and gardenias, matching the strange woman in Zach's dream. Zach tells the Fusion girls that Simone's death was the result of a drug overdose, but it later becomes very clear that's not the case - because Ryan's sister, Erin, mysteriously dies the same way.
"Erin's found on the roof of Fusion," says Mathison, "She's got a gardenia, which was [Ryan's late wife] Gillian's favorite flower. I don't know if there is a connection, but I suspect there is because that was a big story point for Ryan and Gillian."
Erin's death rocks Pine Valley because now it's clear a serial killer is on the loose.
"Jonathan is a wreck," continues Mathison. "He's extremely upset. Erin raised him! When Ryan comes in, he immediately shuts down his emotions and tries to deal. [Ryan] wants to help Jonathan because he still has guilt about the way they grew up. As time goes on, Ryan continues to shut out his emotions and move through it, almost in a comatose state. It's Annie who shakes him and says, 'Come on, you have to grieve. You can't do this.'"
It would perk Ryan up to know he has a daughter, but neither Ryan nor Annie knows Emma is his.
"Kendall knows about it, though," says Mathison. "Even though it's very clear to Kendall that she's in love with Zach, she still has feelings for Ryan. Now that she knows Ryan is sort of getting involved with Annie, she has this fear that if Ryan learns about that, maybe he won't be the father to [Kendall's son] Spike that he should be."
Since Kendall is the boss at Fusion, she's facing bigger problems than who little Emma belongs to.
"She still manages to cause some trouble," says Mathison with a laugh. "Apparently, there are a whole series of scenes coming up where Kendall says to Annie that the only reason Ryan is attracted to her is because she looks like [his ex-wife] Greenlee
