I'll never forget this performance by Jeff. It really haunted me. It was aired on 8/26/05. This alone should make him win the emmy, as this was an unbelievably heartbreaking performance. This is a long read, but it's worth it.
Jonathan: I didn't do anything, Dad. I swear.
Ryan: I'm not Dad, Hockett. It's me.
Jonathan: I swear, I -- I didn't do anything. I wasn't going anywhere. I was -- I was just picking up. I was -- I was cleaning, Dad, for you. I was being just the way you like. I was being quiet, I wasn't making a sound. There was no whining. I wasn't whining.
Ryan: You are good, Jonathan. You're very good, and you're safe. It's me, Hockett. It's Ryan.
Jonathan: Ryan went away.
Ryan: But I came back, because I'm going to help you.
Jonathan: No! No, no, no! Please, Dad, please don't! Please, I'm sorry! Please don't. Please don't, Dad.
Ryan: Jonathan --
Erin: See what you left behind when you bailed on us, Ryan?
Ryan: Jonathan --
Jonathan: I'll be quiet, I'll be quiet. I'll -- I'll be quiet, ok? I'm -- I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Dad. Please don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me. I'll be quiet, I'll be good. I'll be good. Please, Dad, don't, don't. Please don't hurt
Ryan: Jonathan, it's not --
Jonathan: No, no --
Ryan: It's not Patrick. I'm not Patrick. I'm not Dad.
Jonathan: I've been waiting for you, Dad.
Ryan: It's not Dad! It's me, it's Ryan.
Jonathan: I'm glad you're home. Here, come sit down. I hope Mrs. Craig didn't mess up the accounts again. I could -- I'm real good at math, Dad. I could do the books for you.
Ryan: I don't want you -- I don't want you to do anything. You don't --
Jonathan: I'll get the pillows just the way you like them, and I've got the remote ready for you. You can watch the game. We -- we could watch it together, Dad, if you want. I'd like that. Would you like that?
Ryan: Jonathan, I just want you to relax.
Jonathan: Let me take your shoes. Let me take your shoes. On your feet all day trying to make a buck -- I know they must hurt. And now I -- I got your slippers here, the ones Mom got you for Christmas.
Ryan: Jonathan, I don't want you to --
Jonathan: No, they're here, Dad. I'll find them, I'll find them. I will, I will. Well, you must be ready for a beer. I got your glass in the freezer just the way you like it. I could pour it for you, Dad, the way you taught me -- no foam? I mean, no foam. If you pour too fast, you bruise the flavor. You bruise the flavor, you bruise the --
Ryan: Jonathan, it's me, your brother.
Jonathan: I didn't mean -- I'm sorry, I didn't mean that. I didn't mean that. I didn't mean that. I didn't mean -- I'll find the -- I'll find the slippers, then I'll get the beer. I'll find your slippers. I'll find your slippers. Where are they? Where are they? Where are they? I put them here. I know they're here! I put them here, Dad, I promise! I put them here special. Special -- I'm stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid!
Erin: Jonathan?
Jonathan: I've got to get it right. I've got to get it right. I can get it right. I can get it right. I can do it. I can get it. Just don't be mad. Don't be mad. Please don't be mad at me, Dad. The beer's -- the beer's cold. The beer's cold, no foam, no bruises.
Ryan: Jonathan --
Jonathan: No, no!
Ryan: Stop --
Jonathan: No, Dad! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry, Dad! Please don't. Please don't
Jonathan: Please, Dad, no! I didn't do anything!
Ryan: Jonathan, I'm not going to hurt you.
Jonathan: Don't give me a shower.
Ryan: I'm not --
Jonathan: Don't give me a shower, Dad.
Ryan: A shower?
Jonathan: I'm sorry. I'll be good! I'll be better! Dad, I'm in the shower. I'm clean, I'm clean. I'm cleansed, scrubbed real hard. Even behind my ears, Dad -- look.
Ryan: Jonathan, can you see who I really am?
Jonathan: I scrubbed real hard there.
Ryan: I'm going to take care of you.
Jonathan: I scrubbed real hard. I scrubbed real hard.
Ryan: I'm going to take care of you.
Jonathan: Please don't -- no, Dad, please don't take care of me!
Ryan: Look, it's all over. Everything -- it's over!
Erin: Shh.
Jonathan: It's never over. It's never over. It's never over.
Ryan: I will make sure that nobody hurts you ever again. Do you understand that? I'm here to help.
Jonathan: No, no, no!
Ryan: I'm here to help!
Jonathan: No! I'll be good!
Ryan: Do something to stop this!
Erin: Stop what you started? You did this to Jonathan when you left, all right? We lived it every day! We still do.
Ryan: I knew it was bad.
Erin: Oh, big hero Ryan -- you couldn't possibly be responsible for this, could you? You left, you never turned back, and this is what you left behind, Ryan.
Ryan: I didn't think Dad --
Erin: No, no, you didn't think about us at all, did you? And now you want to zoom back in here like one of your comic book heroes? Do you think you can fix me, fix Jonathan? You don't know jack, Ryan!
Jonathan: I'm so sorry, Dad. I'm so sorry. Please, I'll be good. Wait, wait, Dad. Dad, Braden and Ryan didn't mean it. It was just a joke. They weren't really going anywhere. It was just a joke.
Ryan: Jonathan, I want to talk to you. I want to talk to you.
Jonathan: Please don't punish them.
Ryan: It's Ryan. I need to talk to you.
Jonathan: Braden and Ryan didn't mean it, Dad. It was just a joke.
Ryan: It is Ryan --
Jonathan: No, no, no! Dad, I'm sorry!
Ryan: Do something! Stop this!
Jonathan: God, please don't hit me! Please, please don't hurt me, Dad! Please! Please!
Erin: Not until you see what I did.
Jonathan: Please don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me. Please don't hurt me.
Erin: Jonathan?
Jonathan: I'll be good.
Erin: Jonathan, I'll take care of Daddy, ok? You go hide.
Jonathan: Please don't let him hurt me anymore.
Erin: No.
Jonathan: Please don't let him --
Erin: I won't, I won't.
Jonathan: Please don't let him hurt me anymore.
Jonathan: I didn't do anything, Dad. I swear.
