I think the scenes were great, but it did disappoint me to hear Jon say that he really IS in love with Lily.

Personally I think he just feels like he loves Lily because this is really the first time in his life that he has felt like a "good" person, guilt free and a contributing person to society. And since Lily is with him at the time, he feels like he can protect her and "help" her, which probably makes him feel pretty good about himself and therefore makes him think he's in love.
If they had done the Jily romance as a story about a guy finding himself after a long childhood of abuse and then a major medical situation, I think it would have been more powerful. Less about an older guy and a younger girl and more about a character who is trying to live a normal life after many years of pain.

I can imagine him having a scene with another woman (probably Amanda) and saying something like "I thought I was in love with Lily, but truthfully I was in love with the person she made me be."
Maybe he thinks its love but really its more like gratitude.

That would be appropriate and probably exactly the truth. And, it would dignify the Jily relationship instead of it being a joke.

Yeah, exactly. I tend to think that kind of like Erin, this Jonathan has yet to really be in love, because anything that came before the tumour stuff is now a blur and not really valid, in a sense. He was too messed up to really experience it. So anything he experiences now will be new, and this thing with Lily is probably more that he thinks its love but its not. It's platonic love at best.
