Years ago in Alabama a grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe: This is an exact copy as written & found in an old scrapbook (with spelling errors & all) Washing Clothes.. Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water. Sort things, make 3 piles 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags. To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch. Hang old rags on fence. Spread tea towels on grass. Pore wrench water in flower bed, scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs, brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.

That's so cool, stg. It makes me feel guilty for letting my laundry pile up. If I had to do laundry the old fashioned way I think I'd either wear dirty clothes or I'd run around nude. And I can't wait to refer to the wind as being "pert." ;D I love fun, new/old words.

That's neat. Wow, when you think of how far we have come since then. I know my washer gets a workout, especially with towels. Men seem to use twice as many towels as women. I haven't figured that one out yet.

Barbara, my sister says the same thing. Her son and husband use more towels than she and her daughter do.

That's a good point Elana. ;D And Amy you can tell your sister she is right. I am glad I am not the only one who notices this.

That is so cool! Thanks for sharing!! But what did they do in the rain? And in the winter snow? I'm not sure how they managed when the weather was bad, some didn't make it, got sick & died .
