Background: While attending college for a degree in marketing, I worked full time at a large real estate office in the relocation department. I didmarketing too, but also worked as a relocation consultant. Once I graduated, I took a job in the same field as a marketing manager and now do just straight marketing.
Situation: In the past week, I keep getting job offers! People I used to work with are reccomending me for jobs in relocation. I've turned a few down due to distance and because I want to stay in straight marketing. But one interested me, wants me to direct their relocation department. I have an interview tomorrow just to check it out.
Problem: It's not in my field of choice. If I took the job, I'd basically be cutting marketing out and staying with the relocation stuff. I love my job now, the only thing I don't like is that the upper management is poor and they fire people on a whim. You never know if you're next.
What would you do? I haven't gone on the interview, so the pay may not be the same and this would be a non-issue. But I'm going out of curiosity of what's available to me out there.

Absolutely go on the interview. It doesn't mean you have to quit your current job, but it's always good to know about what elase is out there. It's also good experience to go on interviews. Go and interview and see what happens!

crappy job security you have!!!!!! once you interview and find out what exactly the postions entails you will know if it is something you would like.
it's going to be a gamble no matter what but hopefully you will get a feel if you would be happy there. if you would be happy without marketing.
go and check it out. have an open mind and then you can decide what would make you happy.
also, would directing their relocation dept require more hours? and how would that sit with you with aden???
good luck sweeti

Thanks. I already told her the hours I work, so that shouldn't be an issue. If it is, then bye bye. I just worry that I might think it's a great opportunity because I'm considering money but will later realize that it's about much more than the money.
Does that even make sense?

does make sense. erase money from your mind during the interview. think of what would make you happy. if this is a job that you could really be happy with. and then you could come home in a good mood for aden!!!!!! oh - yeah - your husband, too.

I quit a job without even having another one b/c it made me so unhappy. I didn't like the person it was making me into. Even though my current position isn't as 'hands on' as I may like, in every other respect it is the perfect job. So go where you feel you will be happiest - everything else will follow

I totally agree, Chandy. I would never work where I was not happy. I stayed at my jobs a long time, but if I ever started one and hated it for awhile, I would certainly quit. My mom would get so mad, but I won't stay somewhere where I'm unhappy.

if your unhappy it's too hard to leave at the door when you get home. if your miserable your family will get the vibe. not worth it

Too true. It took me a long time to make the decision to leave, but when I did it was like a large weight off my shoulders. Now I make more money, get holidays and weekends off, don't have to work nights or be on call and I get so many perks I still don't believe it. When I opened my Xmas bonus check it took me five minutes to realize what it was ;D ;D ;D

Well, I love the job I have right now. It's just that security thing I worry about. They fire people all eth time without warning. And I guess holidays really get them in the mood to cut someone loose because I swear before every holiday they fire someone. I just never know when it might be me!
