i used to work in an icu while i was in school as a huc (health unit coordinator) the RN's are the one up there saving the lives. by time the resident would get there they had set everything up and kept the patient alive. i have soo much respect for RN's. it is a difficult job that i don't think is respected as much as it should be. ahhh - but at 33 i'm done working for life. that is sooo sad and boring!!!!!!! not as fun as one would think!!!!!!!

I wish your brother luck, laverylover cuz it's a hard road, but very rewarding. And thank you kallie for the props cuz sometimes it is a thankless job. I have a lot of respect for HUCs BTW. We had a great one that would pretty much do anything for us (I'm still friends with him even tho I've moved on). Our residents were pretty cool mostly, but I worked at a county hospital. The residents and nurses were kinda in the same hell together.
And there's something to be said for staying home. Sometimes I feel bad when I don't spend enough time with my son or I'm too beat to do much after work. There's plusses and minuses to both I guess.
But hey, we can all escape to this place. So it's all good.

the message board keeps me sane!!!! i loved being a huc. literally in a code i would have to listen for what they were yellin from the room to get the orders done. i also had to get certified in reading ekg machine and do meds. i thought it was kewl. i'm glad you have respect because it really was a thankless job!!!!!

Beth, My hat's off to you and your profession. I am a manager at a telephone answering service. I know the hell some of our doctors put the nurses through. Prior to Katrina I worked the graveyard shift and we talked nightly with the same groups of nurses at the various hospitals. Usually the telephone operators and nurses formed a bond. We knew which doctors would answer quickly, who we had to hunt down, and which ones definitely did NOT like being called in the wee hours of the morning. I now work the evening shift, and wherever else I am needed, but I still get to talk to the nurses, and you have a tough job.

Thanks you guys. There was a lot of good stuff, but most days you feel like crap cuz you feel you could've done more (no matter that you didn't have any food, water, or a bathroom break) in the 14 hours on the floor. One resident felt so sorry for me he actually brought me pizza. Of course, I didn't get to eat cuz 5 min later my pt coded. But I definitley appreciated the thought.

It was hetic, non-stop interruptions and chaos. I'll work a half day tomorrow and thurs, and then full day next tues and next thurs and supposedly will have learned all I need to know by then so then I'll be on my own in the office on Friday. *eek* I think I'll like the job once I get more of a handle on it.. I'm still not sure about the hours though... Tues/Thurs one till 8 and then (nov-april) sundays. I never wanted to work when my kids weren't in school....
