Thanks for the advice, Trixie and eveyone. It's really appreciated. Honestly, the first day I thought maybe I'm supposed to be this miserable the first day. I mean I was counting the minutes and I only did that one class in school (really bad one) and that's been ages. Than today it was the same thing and I'm miserable! I can't tell you how wonderful it felt to walk the streets of NYC and be free tonight. And the subway was a friggin' Godsend! It was. I just don't think I'm supposed to feel this way about a job. You guys know how much I love what I do, but these past few days working at this unstructured company...not good.

What is the chance of you finding something else there soon? How long can you stay in NYC before signing a contract or a lease?

Well, I can stay for a few more days. I wish something else here was open- trust me this city truly is the best in the world. If you haven't been you need to visit

I used to live 45 min outside of the City on LI, I know what you mean Meg. I miss NYC terribly. Can you look for work while working?
also- Give yourself a timeline. If things haven't improved by X date I will quit

My advice, for what it's worth: always follow your gut on these things. Only you can answer this one: do you think you can be happy? Do you think its just a temporary thing, you're not used to it, that sort of thing? Or is it far deeper than that? Some places I honestly feel you just KNOW you belong, that it's right for you. I honestly make decisions by that feeling a lot of the time where there's nothing else to base it on. If you are unhappy, and you don't see that improving, then perhaps you should get out now. The only other thing I would consider is would it be worth it to stick it out for a year. Does that help your resume or anything like that? If not...then there's no point to staying, right? You know I hope it works out for you sweetie!!!

Thanks for the advice, Minkie. I'm going to go to work tomorrow and see if anything changes-if not, I can't stay. By the way, I talked to one of my mentors and he said it wouldn't hurt my career. I mean if I act like an ass (which I won't) then that obviously hurts careers but I won't. And I haven't signed anything so it's not a binding thing right now. i feel like a jerk, but I don't want to be miserable

That's good to know! Then it's totally about your own feelings on the place.

Meg, I am so sorry to hear that your new job is so awful. I agree with the others. If you are that unhappy so soon, and with the fact that you have not seen a contract, it is not a a good sign. If you are miserable, you will hate your job. This is not good. It seems that no one is even helping you as you enter the company. My job has some ups and downs, but I can honestly say I love my job. I started as a summer job while I took a break from college. August 29th will mark my 29th year with the company. It turned out to be a VERY long "summer job". Since you are so new to the job, it would probably be good to give it another day, but honestly, I wouldn't give it much more than that. With your talent, you will be able to find a job you do love. Good luck hon, and please keep us posted!

Aww, Meg! I am so sorry to hear that the job is making you miserable. I can't add much more than what has been said because it's all good advice. Go with your gut - if you don't think you'll be happy then start looking for something else. I can say though that I've had jobs I hated the first few days or weeks, but then started to love. You get used to the people and the job and you start to "find your groove." The job I have now wasn't so fun at first, but I was lucky enought to be able to make it my own and created my own job description and now I love it. So if there's any chance that you might be able to find enjoyment, I'd say stay, since it allows you to stay in a place you love so much. But if you don't think things will change, I'd say find something that will make you happy! I'll be thinking of you! Let us know how it turns out this week!

Ok, I'm going to give you advise from the other end, the employers end. If one of my employees came into a new position and felt ovewhelmed, unhappy, or feels that the company is not a good fit, then I would hope they would come to me right away and discuss it. There are changes that could me made that might help it become your dream job or at the least, you could make suggestions that would help everyone be happy! So before giving in, talk to your boss and let him/her know what your frustrations are and that you are concerned that this may not be the position for you BEFORE you sign anything. Good luck Meg, you deserve to be happy. But no job is without stress or disorganization and sometimes it just sucks having to go in but we all have to work in order to be able to live our lives so sometimes we have to take the bad with the good. It's all a matter of how bad it is and if you have another job to fall back on.

No it wasn't, so I talked to the director and I'm unemployed again -Wahoo-lol. It went really well and he was completely understanding. I didn't feel right there and, really, I think there's something better out there for me. Maybe I'm crazy but I do think things happen for a reason. Thanks for the advice everyone!
by the way Cruise I totally get what you are saying and I did talk to them at the end of the first day and (politely) told them they were giving me little or no direction. They apologized but never fixed the situation or helped me much as far as direction. They were really nice people and i think like me this was a learning experience for them too.
